Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Cookout Special pt. 1

The 4th of July was this past week; and what better way to celebrate than to invite a bunch of friends over and grill up some food from the upcoming Zelda title, Breath of the Wild!?

When Nintendo revealed The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at E3 last month I know I was blown away. The freedom to discover an expansive landscape, and use the flora and fauna to your advantage, will certainly be a welcomed addition to the franchise. Most of the featured foods seemed perfect for a cookout, so we gathered up our ingredients and made a day out of it. These recipes won’t be as extensive as my others, but they’ll still provide a good outline and perhaps could inspire a Summer grill-ebration of your very own!

If you’re interested, you can check out this LINK to see all of the food items revealed for the game so far.

Finished recipes of Sneaky Fish, Sauteed Peppers, Grilled Steak and Mushrooms from the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild game series.

I took so many pictures, I figured I’d split them up between two posts; so for this first entry, I’ll be going over the Spicy and Energizing Elixirs, Baked Apple, and Sneaky Steamed Fish.

It’s dangerous to go alone! Click ‘Continue Reading’ for part 1.

+ Spicy Elixir +

Finished recipe of Spicy Elixir from the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild game series.

This is basically a sangria which we added a little spice to. If you can’t get your hands on any wine, feel free to sub in your favorite red fruit juice cocktails. Cran-anything should suffice haha.

ITEMS
Ingredient Amount
French Rosé Wine (dry) 1 bottle (750ml)
Red Blend Wine 1 bottle (750ml)
 Cran-Apple Concentrate (frozen) 1 can
Apricots (fresh, not dried) 2 each
 Plums 2 each
 White Nectarines 2 each
 Lime Juice  2 limes
 Orange Juice 4 oranges
 Fresh Ginger (sliced) 1/4 cup
 Dried Red Chilies 3 each

EQUIP
  • Sharp Knife
  • Large Bowl
WALKTHROUGH
  1. This is a really easy crowd pleaser, but you’ll want to do it the night before you plan to drink it, so that the fruit has enough time to steep. All you need to do is cut the all of the fruit into thin slices and place into a large bowl along with the citrus juice, ginger, and chilies. Then pour the wine (if using) and fruit juice over top.Marinating sliced fruit for the Spicy Elixir from the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild game series.
  2. Wrap or cover the top of the bowl and leave the mixture in the fridge overnight. The next day simply remove the chilies and serve!

As usual, these recipes are in no way absolute or unchangeable. if you don’t want any spice in your fruity drink, omit the chilies. If you want to use peaches rather than apricots, go right ahead! This is just my interpretation, tempered with what I thought my party guests would enjoy. So, please, have fun with it!

+ Energizing Elixir +

Finished recipe for Energizing Elixir from the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild game series.

Again, if you don’t have access to, or would rather not use alcohol, simply find a fruit juice that works for you to make up the weight. :]

ITEMS
Ingredient Amount
 Vodka 1 bottle (1L)
 Limeade Concentrate (frozen) 1 can
 Mountain Dew 1 bottle (2L)
 Limes (sliced) 3 each

EQUIP
  • Sharp Knife
  • Large Bowl
WALKTHROUGH
  1. Not much of a procedure here haha. Just combine all the ingredients in a bowl and chill with ice. Always drink responsibly!

+ Baked Apple +

Finished recipe of Baked Apples from the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild game series.

You can bake these apples just as they are, but I thought I’d add a little variation to make it more APPLE-y.

ITEMS
Ingredient Amount
Fuji or Gala Apples 6 each
 Cinnamon 1 pinch (per apple)
Brown Sugar 1 1/2 tsp (per apple)

EQUIP
  • Sharp Knife
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Baking Tray or Cookie Sheet
WALKTHROUGH
  1. Preset the oven to 350F
  2. Use a sharp knife to cut around the top stem of the apple. Cut at an angle in a circular motion (cutting away from yourself) in order to create a cone shaped reservoir.
  3. Sprinkle in a pinch of cinnamon and then pack full of brown sugar (about 1 1/2 tsp each)Cored and stuffed apple with cinnamon and brown sugar, waiting to be wrapped in foil and baked.
  4. Wrap the apples up completely in aluminum foil and place on a baking tray (to catch the drips) and then into the 350F oven to bake for 1 hour. Be careful when removing them because they’ll be hotter than they seem!

These can even be done on the grill as long as you turn them constantly. Just use tongs to test how soft the apple has become before removing from the foil.

+ Sneaky Steamed Fish +

Finished Sneaky Fish recipe from the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild game series.

ITEMS
Ingredient Amount
Red Snapper (head on) 1 each
 Banana Leaves (thawed) 2 large
 Lemon (sliced) 2 each
 Rosemary 3 sprigs
 Dill 1 TBSP
 Thyme 10 sprigs
 Salt 2 TBSP
 Pepper 2 tsp

EQUIP
  • Sharp Knife
  • Butcher’s Twine
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Gloves (optional)
  • Large Baking Tray
WALKTHROUGH
  1. We bought our snappers from the local Asian market and they were able to gut, clean, and scale the fish for us. Although it can be done at home, this service significantly reduces the time you’d spend and the mess you’d make, so I highly recommend it.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350F
  3. In order to enhance the flavor of the fish we’ll need to season from the inside, as well as the outside. Combine the lemon, rosemary, dill, thyme, salt, and pepper together and use half of this mixture to stuff inside the fish (feel free to use gloves for this part).
  4. Banana leaves can be found at the Asian market as well. They come frozen, so make sure they have some time to thaw before use. Running cold water over the frozen leaves can speed this process up. Once you have a useable leaf, lay it down on a clean surface and place half of the remaining herb mixture in the center.
  5. Place the fish directly on top of the herbs and lemon, and season the top of the fish with the remainder. Wrap up the leaf, being carful not to tear it on the fins or tail. If the fish you have is particularly large, you may find it easier to use two leaves to cover it completely. Sneaky fish stuffed with fresh herbs and lemon then wrapped in banana leaves to be steamed.
  6. Use aluminum foil to further encase the wrapped fish and create a firm packet. Place the fish on a large baking sheet and bake in the oven for about 40 minutes, or until the flesh pulls away from the bones easily.

I hope you enjoyed these Breath of the Wild recipes! If you’re wondering where all the meat is, in part 2 I’ll be going over Seared Steak, Spicy Pepper Steak, Steak Skewer, and the Steak and Mushroom Skewer (that’s a lot of steak!).

  • One of my favorite aspects of any video game or anime is the food. THE FOOD. No food, no interest on my part. xD

The fact that you detail a lot of different recipes of varying types is something I love about your blog. More importantly, the fact that you don’t over complicate the recipes by adding dozens and dozens of steps, or steps that require fancy equipment that the average shmoe might not have. Or the fact that you don’t use a bazillion ingredients….or the fact that you don’t use really expensive or exclusive ingredients…

Basically I just love your blog. ALL THE THINGS about your blog. xD

Please, please, please keep up the good work, because people like me seeking delicious foodie refuge will follow until we die of old age!
