Finished Hot Dog Sushi recipe from the Earthbound and Mother 3 game series.

It’s no overstatement to say that I’m a huge EarthBound fan; and in turn, a fan of the entire MOTHER series. Indeed, it was the bizarre foods from these games that originally inspired the blog itself!

Right now, hundreds of EarthBound fans from across the country are meeting up in a small Tucson hotel for the second Camp Fangamer convention; except for me that is :c …. Not one to take an unaccommodating work schedule sitting down, I wanted to put out another recipe from MOTHER 3, in honor of this year’s camp theme.

This one’s for you, guys. I miss you all!

Mother 3 is a game with a lot of chimeras. Most of these mixed up amalgams come in the form of enemies you’ll find along the way; like a snake with a chicken’s head, or a half-kangaroo, half-hammerhead shark monster (cue the “What has science done!?” memes).

Marketed as a ‘sophisticated good’ in New Pork City, the Hot Dog Sushi is merely a type of culinary chimera which I promise won’t inspire nearly as many nightmares as the abominations above.

This recipe is everything I love about writing this blog: weird food, coupled with a vague in-game sprite and description, really gives me the creative freedom to have fun exploring different ideas. The fact that they came out SUPER TASTY only adds to the satisfaction, so I certainly hope you can give them a shot sometime. :]

Last time on Lvl.1 Chef, we went over some of the new food items from the upcoming Legend of Zelda game, Breath of the Wild. Although a few of those recipes used the oven, the gloves are coming off this time as we bust out the tongs and really get grilling!

Actually, you still might want those gloves!

In case you missed it, the E3 footage for the game was broken up into different gameplay themes such as combat, dungeon puzzles, and to my excitement: cooking!

I figured I’d like to the video here so you could check out how it works in the game. I can already see myself spending way too much time just hunting and gathering and cooking in the forest. Haha.

Anyway, click ‘Continue Reading’ to dive into the meat (and potatoes!) of this post already!

The 4th of July was this past week; and what better way to celebrate than to invite a bunch of friends over and grill up some food from the upcoming Zelda title, Breath of the Wild!?

When Nintendo revealed The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at E3 last month I know I was blown away. The freedom to discover an expansive landscape, and use the flora and fauna to your advantage, will certainly be a welcomed addition to the franchise. Most of the featured foods seemed perfect for a cookout, so we gathered up our ingredients and made a day out of it. These recipes won’t be as extensive as my others, but they’ll still provide a good outline and perhaps could inspire a Summer grill-ebration of your very own!

If you’re interested, you can check out this LINK to see all of the food items revealed for the game so far.

Finished recipes of Sneaky Fish, Sauteed Peppers, Grilled Steak and Mushrooms from the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild game series.

I took so many pictures, I figured I’d split them up between two posts; so for this first entry, I’ll be going over the Spicy and Energizing Elixirs, Baked Apple, and Sneaky Steamed Fish.

It’s dangerous to go alone! Click ‘Continue Reading’ for part 1.

Hello, and welcome, to the long awaited and severely procrastinated Season 2 of Lvl.1 Chef! We’re not pulling any punches today as we jump right into ta crazy spicy dish inspired by the most popular pink protagonist in all of Popstar, Kirby! I hear his new game Plate Robobot is pretty awesome, so what better way to kick off the season than with a recipe for the iconic Superspicy Curry. Although it made its debut in Kirby’s Dream Land for the original Game Boy, it’s probably more well known from its Super Smash Bros. incarnation.

a curious Lvl.1 Chef approaches and quickly regrets his decisions

I want to thank my friend, and fellow Kirby fan Derek Rose, for his help in the conceptualization of, and inspiration for, this recipe. We decided this dish should be a combination of extremely spicy Indian style curry and the more mild Japanese style curry as it’s shown in the artwork. To this end, we will begin by making a sauce from some traditional (I use this term loosely) red curry paste ingredients.

Speaking of ingredients, the dish gets its super spicy kick from the inclusion of dried ‘Ghost Peppers,’ also known as Bhut Jolokia. And at over 400 times as hot as a Jalapeño, they are considered to be among the top 5 spiciest chiles in the world and definitely helps this curry live up to its namesake! It may take some searching, but I was able to find ghost peppers in the dried chili section of a large local grocery store.

Just to clarify, when I this recipe is super spicy, I mean it! Although if might not make you shoot fireballs out of your mouth*, please feel free to dial back the spice to suit your palate. I’d rather have you make something that tastes good rather than something “accurate.” Always cook responsibly and try to avoid the following scenario:

As usual, click ‘Continue Reading’ below for the recipe and detailed procedure! Happy cooking, everyone; it’s good to be back :].

Hey, guys! I wanted to have this recipe come out on Valentine’s Day, but man if this recipe didn’t give me some trouble in R&D. My apologies for the slight delay. This one’s been on my list for a while, and I’m actually pretty proud with how it turned out, all things considered!

Strawberry tofu is one of the few items that has seen representation in all three MOTHER games (if you missed it in EarthBound, it’s because it was localized into Trout Yogurt for the English speaking audience). This particular recipe is based on the Mother 3 version, as it’s described as a “stylish dessert” rather than the MOTHER version that looks like someone cut whole strawberries in half (hulls intact!) and shoved it in a tofu mold:

Another note that’s somewhat Valentine’s day related is that in MOTHER, there is a doctor who is very curious about Strawberry Tofu and will reward the player with “Words of Love” if he is brought some. Then again, if you give the dessert to one of his assistants the player receives “Swear Words.” Neither of these items do anything useful in battle, they’re just a fun little diversion. Haha.

But hey, I learned a lot about tofu, and tofu making, as I worked through this recipe so click ‘Continue Reading’ to check it out and give it a try!

Just a quick little post from me today. One of my Twitter followers requested this one, and even though it doesn’t require any cooking or baking on my part it still looked pretty fun to put together.

Like I said, this isn’t really a proper recipe, but I’ve included some materials and components needed in case you wanted to put one together for yourself. I’ve also included some cat pictures down below because who doesn’t like cat pictures? haha.

Anyway, thanks for the inspiration, Cat Cora!

I figured I’d finish off this month of requests with something that almost seems like a rite of passage among video game food people, such as myself: the famously dubious cake from Portal.

All memes aside, this is actually a really delicious cake. It takes a lot of chocolate, but is perfect for special occasions; or birthdays, which is one of the reasons why I made it (my friend even brought over his Wheatly plush to be in the picture!). I hope you have a chance to try out the recipe sometime, because this really was a triumph.

Hey, how about now? Click ‘Continue Reading,’ and happy cooking, everyone! :]
